About

DrawingMomHi! I’m Drawing Mom… also known as JM. I’m just a mom who loves to draw. I’ve loved to draw as long as I can remember. And now, I’m just doing what I love to do. <3 My Life with Animals…

I guess you could say that I’m a dog person — have been all my life. But I love kittens. There’s something about those furry little bodies and cute little noses and ears that get to me. And the fact that they love to play. :)

I don’t have cats of my own, but I do have close family that do… which is good, because it allows me to brush up on my cat-playing skills.

I owned a lot of animals growing up, a couple of which were birds. These feathered creatures hold a special place in my heart. My first bird was a budgie. Oh how smart she was, and so sweet! She loved playing with my dog, and used to fly all over the house and land on her. It was really so precious to watch their interaction.

My second bird was a Nanday. I rescued her from a solitary life of living in someone’s basement apartment. I wasn’t sure how old she was when I first got her, but she lived with me for 9 wonderful years. Sadly, she passed away after we mistakenly started the self-cleaning oven mode on our oven. If you own a bird, do not ever do this. They have delicate respiratory systems, and by the time we noticed anything was wrong, it was already too late. No self-cleaning oven mode, no non-stick cookware. Ever. Period.

Besides dogs, and birds, I’ve had the pleasure of owning, a hamster, a beta fish, and some mini lop bunnies. There was never a dull moment around our home!

We had a dwarf hamster for 17 months (but he recently passed away), and as of Jan. 2016 have a black bear hamster and two dogs: a 5-year-old Leonberger/Shepherd mix and a 14-month-old small Shepherd mix (who’s had 2 bilateral hip dysplasia surgeries at 6 & 7 months). In Jan. 2015 we helped our 16-year-old American Eskimo mix over the Rainbow Bridge.

My Life with Art…

I’ve always been interested in anything to do with art. I used to be able to sit in my room for hours just creating things. I used to build mansions with stairs out of oak tag and tape, and draw, draw, draw… anything and everything. I just loved being able to replicate things, either by looking directly at it, or from a photo. It made me feel empowered, in a way.

I’ve tried a lot of mediums throughout my life… tempera, watercolors, oils, pastels, oil pastels, Design markers, graphite and chalk, just to name a few. But for the past few years I’ve gone back to basics, and have enjoyed drawing in colored pencils.

How DrawingMom.com began…

In early 2012 I started drawing animals for some of my blog friends, who happen to be the most wonderful photographers. After all, you need a really good reference photo in order to catch all the small details in a drawing. Little by little, word has gotten out that I do pet portraits. And that’s pretty much where my story continues.

My drawings are now in homes all across the United States, and as far as Malaysia and the UK (at the Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Center. Thank you Mark Tomlinson!). Commission a drawing from me and I’ll ship it FREE with tracking to the US & Canada, First Class via the USPS (Int’l rates to be determined).

More Art…

I don’t often draw people, but I’ve been known to get the urge to. If you’re interested in seeing some of my non-animal drawings, click over to The Art of the Draw. There, you can see more about my drawing process, my speed drawings, other drawings I’ve done, and artwork done by my family. :)

Connect with Me…

I also have a Facebook page. The photos of my drawings are slightly larger than they are on this page, and there are some in-progress drawings as well. If you’d like to connect with me, my Facebook page is a great place to visit! You can also connect with me on Instagram (I post photos of Bailey & Jax every day, and try to paint 1-2 paintings each week. I also do speed painting videos of each painting I do), Deviant Art, and also these sites that I have sadly not kept as current: Flickr and Tumblr. :)

See Commissions page for ordering information.
